Skinstitut Peels

How do Chemical Peel Treatments work?

Chemical peels are topical agents that produce a superficial and precise ablation of the skin. A controlled destruction of the outer skin layers (epidermis and upper dermis) is achieved, which is followed by skin repair and regeneration. Chemical peels produce a controlled wound that will result in skin renewal with the reduction or disappearance of sun damage, pigmentation, acne lesions, fine lines and wrinkles. Superficial depressed scars are softened and become less visible. The depth of ablation and results depend on the strength of agents used.

Wound Healing Process

Typical results after the Chemical Peel Treatment

Inflammatory 1-3+ days

An acute inflammation is induced leading to a skin repair response with mild to moderate redness, skin warmth and mild swelling. Rarely- slight weeping may occur. The repair process is triggered with production of multiple growth factors.

Proliferative 3-10+ days As the redness settles, skin dryness with flaking –peeling occurs. Growth factors induce regeneration and normalization of the epidermis, and increased production of type 3 collagen and elastin in the dermis.

Maturation 28+ days up to 1 year. Collagen remodelling continues for at least six months creating a plumper dermis and improved skin tone. Scar tissue is softened and skin smoothness is improved Type 3 collagen is gradually replaced by type 1 stronger collagen.

AHA Enzyme

Our recommendation if you have never experienced a chemical peel before or you’re new to the Skinstitut product range. It is also the peel solution for those who think their skin is too delicate for chemical exfoliation. This gentle, micro-exfoliating treatment uses Papain Enzymes to gently polish the skin without irritation. Vitamin B3 strengthens the immune defence while Chamomile, Vitamin B5, and Hyaluronic Acid helps to soothe, hydrate. Skin is left clear, bright, and hydrated while dryness, flaking, and sensitivity is no longer.

This peel can be further intensified for sun-damaged and photoaged skins with the addition of Vitamin C. A carefully balanced AHA blend of Lactic, Glycolic, and L.Mandelic Acids helps to boost your natural luminosity while decongesting the skin. Vitamin B, and Kakadu Plum and Witch Hazel Extracts strengthens the skin’s immune defence while Canadian Willowherb is a powerful anti-inflammatory to soothe and calm. Peel Accelerator is used to degrease the skin before each peel and as a peel itself

Pre & Post Chemical Peel Treatment Care

Pre-Treatment Care

Proper pre-peel care will build up the skin’s strength, ensure cosmetic peels are even, and reduce the healing time after treatment.

Preparation for your peel begins 14 days before coming into the clinic. You will need to use a specialised cleanser, as prescribed by your dermal aesthetician, to cleanse your skin once a day. In addition, you need to use an SPF30+ sunscreen every day.

Post-Treatment Care

As each peel and its effect varies, so too will post-care treatment. While our clinicians will advise you on the specific post-care regime for your selected treatment, there is general advice that applies to all peels:

Your skin will be tender – be gentle with it.

Don’t pick, scrub, or peel the skin, as this can lead to complications. Instead, wait a few days and gently exfoliate with the product your clinician recommends.

Don’t use any scrubs, exfoliants or acne cleaners other than those recommended by your clinician. They will slow down the healing process by irritating the skin.

Continue to protect your skin after a face peel with SPF30+ sunscreen every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect during the facial peel treatment?

Initially, your skincare professional will discuss your concerns and note anything you wish to improve about your skin. This will help them determine the best types of peels for your specific skin, from chemical peels for acne through to chemical peels for dry skin. You will need to explain how you currently look after your skin so they can tailor a skincare routine and treatment to achieve your desired results. Your skin will be cleansed and assessed, followed by exfoliation, vitamin serums, massage and a mask. Extractions and other advanced electrotherapies may also be incorporated into your chemical peels treatment.

What conditions can be corrected with a chemical peel treatment?

People commonly book skin peels for:

  • Acne – Chemical peels for acne can help to clear active acne and reduce pigmentation caused by acne scarring. TCA and salicylic acid face peels are among the best options for acne.
  • Sensitivity – A chemical facial peel for sensitivity can help to encourage cellular repair and improve barrier function, leaving it looking clearer and more evenly toned.
  • Oily skin – Cosmetic skin peels for oily skin penetrates deep into clogged pores, helping to reduce oil secretions and prevent blemishes.
  • Dry skin – Chemical peel treatments for dry skin work by shedding dry, dead skin to reveal the younger looking skin beneath.
  • Sun damaged and prematurely aged skin – A chemical skin peel for sun damaged or ageing skin removes the top layer of old skin to reveal younger skin that’s smoother and less wrinkled in appearance.
  • Congested skin with blackheads and whiteheads – Chemical peels for blackheads and whiteheads can help to clear marks, reduce the size of pores and minimise scarring.
  • Combination (oily and dry) skin – A cosmetic facial peel for combination skin works by shedding dry skin while also reducing oil production, leaving skin perfectly balanced.
  • Dark circles and puffiness around the eyes – Cosmetic peels for eye circles and puffiness can help to reduce pigmentation and improve collagen in the skin, resulting in skin that looks fresh and youthful.

What are the advantages of a chemical peel treatment?

The treatment process for our chemical peel in Melbourne will vary depending on the nearby individual’s needs and will be tailored to suit your skin by your skincare professional. Generally, a professional chemical treatment will use a blend of products and ingredients which are stronger than most homecare products. This can boost your everyday routine and also be used to complement another skin therapy, achieving greater results from what you already do for your skin. Advanced techniques and electrotherapies may be incorporated into the facial peel to stimulate the deeper skin cells and assist the delivery of key nutrients into the skin.

Does a chemical peel cause pain during the treatment?

The level of pain largely depends on the strength of the peel and your skin’s sensitivity.

It is common to experience a mild tingling or burning sensation as the solution is applied during a chemical peel.

The discomfort is usually minimal and short-lived for superficial peels. Deeper peels may cause more intense sensations, but to minimise discomfort your skin care professional can use cooling techniques or topical anesthetics

What is the optimal timing for a superficial peel before a big event?

After the treatment allow 1 to 2 weeks before a big event. This will give enough time for any redness or peeling to subside, revealing refreshed and glowing skin. However, if it’s your first time having a peel, to understand how your skin responds it’s advisable to try it at least a month in advance.

Are chemical peels suitable for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding?

Chemical peels are generally not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to the stronger acids, can be absorbed through the skin and may pose a risk to the baby. Before undergoing any skincare treatments during pregnancy or breastfeeding always consult with your healthcare provider.

Which type of chemical peel is suitable for my skin concerns?

Superficial peels (e.g., glycolic acid) are great for mild acne, minor discoloration, and general skin rejuvenation.

Medium-depth peels (e.g., TCA peels) target more pronounced wrinkles, acne scars, and moderate discoloration.

Deep peels (e.g., phenol peels) are used for severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, and significant scarring. A consultation with a dermatologist or skincare professional will help determine the best peel for your needs.

How many chemical peel treatments will I need?

As everyone is different, your skincare professional will work with you to plan an individual and realistic course of chemical peels treatment. You may require cosmetic peels once a week or even once every few months.

I have sensitive skin, can I have a facial?

Yes. Obviously, if you have sensitive skin, the face peel used will be gentle and calming to minimise any adverse reactions. Sensitive skin can benefit from professional facial treatments as it is often an impaired barrier function which encourages the skin to overreact to products. Barrier function can be restored with protective hydration and vitamins and minerals.

Which skin treatments work well in conjunction with a chemical peel?

Some popular options include in conjunction with chemical peels:

  • Microneedling: Improves skin texture and reduces scars or fine lines.
  • Laser therapy: Targets pigmentation and promotes collagen production.
  •  Microdermabrasion: Exfoliates the skin, allowing for better penetration of the peel. It’s important to space out these treatments to avoid over-exfoliating the skin, which can lead to irritation.

How can I reduce the risk of complications from a chemical peel?

To minimise the risk of complications:

  • Choose a qualified professional to perform the peel.
  • Follow pre-treatment instructions carefully, such as avoiding certain skincare products and sun exposure.
  • Post-treatment care is crucial: avoid direct sunlight, use a gentle cleanser, and apply moisturizer and sunscreen as directed.
  • Communicate any skin sensitivities or medical conditions to your skincare provider before the treatment.

How long can I expect the results of a chemical peel to last?

The longevity of results depends on the type of peel:

  • Superficial peels: Results typically last a few weeks to a few months, with maintenance treatments needed for sustained results.
  • Medium-depth peels: Results can last several months.
  • Deep peels: These offer long-lasting results, sometimes years, but recovery is more extensive.

Can you see noticeable results after just one chemical peel?

Yes, brighter and smoother skin can be a noticeable improvement can often be seen after just one superficial peel. However, multiple sessions are usually required to achieve the desired results for more significant issues like severe acne scars or deep wrinkles.

What areas of the body can be treated with a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are most commonly applied to the face but can also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, chest, hands, and back. Vic Laser skincare professionals can advise on the best areas to treat based on your specific concerns.
