Yes, it is, as Long as you get the Right Acne Scar Treatment
Acne, despite being a pretty common condition, is the stuff that beauty nightmares are made of. They can pop up at the most inopportune times, and can mar many a beautiful event. And as if this wasn’t bad enough, sometimes, you even have stubborn scars that are left behind in the aftermath of acne. These scars can linger on long after the acne has gone, sometimes, even for years, until you decide to do something about it. Does this mean that you need to start stressing about scars from the moment you get acne? Not really. But it does help to know how acne scars are caused, so that you can be more careful.
But, Before That
A lot of people confuse acne marks and acne scars. Acne marks are essentially a discolouration, also called post inflammatory pigmentation that are left behind after the acne has healed. These can fade off over time, and are not to be mixed up with acne scars.
Acne scars are very distinct, as you will notice a change in the shape and surface texture of the skin. What this means is that that portion of the skin will either be raised above or depressed when compared to the surrounding skin.
So, what causes acne scars?
Acne scars are a result of a skin inflammation due to acne. As most of us would know, acne is caused by dirt, oil and dead skin cells clogging our skin pores. Our body treats this acne as a lesion on the skin, and sets about to repair it by triggering production of more collagen fibres. The excess production of skin cells then changes the texture of the skin, making it denser, and sometimes, creating bumps or indentations in your skin.
What can you do about it?
Acne scars can give skin an uneven and even pockmarked appearance, which is as visible as acne. One of the ways you can help prevent acne scars is by resisting the urge to pick on or pop your acne. As challenging as this might seem, picking on acne can not only damage the lesion, but also end up pushing the bacteria into deeper layers of the skin, worsening your overall condition. So, if you can keep your hands off your zits, then you will reduce your chances of getting acne scars.
However, not all scars are caused by picking on active acne. They could also be caused by cystic acne. And if you get them, then it will require cosmetic intervention in the form of acne scar treatments. You can read more about these in our earlier post.
